Art exhibitions

A NUMBER of exhibitions - both solo and group - open today or have just commenced a run in various galleries and locations in Galway city and county.

Amplified, an exhibition by Roscommon based artist Vida Pain, runs in the University Hospital Galway’s Arts corridor, until Monday.

Partial glimpses of familiar and overlooked images form the basis of Vida’s paintings. She magnifies portions of images, often at skewed angles. The works are sourced from her own digital photographs, which involves a process of cropping and resizing.

Connemara Landscapes, the new exhibition by Roundstone born artist Yvonne King is currently on show at the Clifden Library. The paintings are of familiar Connemara sights such as traditional Galway hookers, harbours, islands, bog, lakes, and the Twelve Bens mountain range. It runs until July 28. See www.yvonnekingart.com Graduates, an exhibition of work from recent GMIT fine art sculpture graduates, opens in The Niland Gallery this evening at 7pm. The exhibition will feature sculpture, drawing, photography, video, and performance art by Noel Arrigan, Jessica Buckley, Ramona Burke, Jason Byrne, Olive Fox, Gerard Garvey, Johnny Hession, Grace McDonogh, Barry O’Brien, and Sarah Scanlon. The exhibition runs until Thursday July 12. The gallery opening hours are open 11am to 8pm.

Brigit’s Garden will be the setting for the outdoor sculpture exhibition Outside: Insight 2012, which opens this Sunday at 3pm.

Exhibiting artists include Beka Peralta, whose umbrellas hanging in the woodland take a playful view on the Irish weather; Michelle Maher who will display colourful ceramics; and The Journey environmental youth arts group who will exhibit their innovative designs made from willow. There will also be displays from Victoria Smith and Joan Sugrue.

All are welcome to the opening and the exhibition which runs until September 2. Opening times are 10am to 5.30pm.
