As part of ‘Bike Week’, Galway Bay Cycling Club have planned a series of events to suit cyclists of all abilities on June 16 and 17
First off, at 4pm on Saturday June 16 will be series of childrens’ races in South Park, The Claddagh. This is the third year of this event and the races are open to all children between the ages of 8 and 14. Prizes and refreshments will be served afterwards.
Later on that day the Galway City Criterium for racing cyclists will take place on closed roads around the Claddagh. Over 100 cyclists from all around the country are expected to turn out for this event.
Galway Bay Cycling Club will have 20 members participating in the race and local cyclist Alan Jacobson will hope to go one better this year after he finished a fine second in the race last year. Other potential Galway Bay CC winners include Liam Frawley, Derek Joyce, Mike Ryder and Darach Behan.
On the following morning (June 17 ) the Wild West Tour sportif takes place on the scenic and rugged roads of Connemara. This sportif consists of two distances, a 115 km cycle for the serious enthusiast and a 43 kilometer cycle aimed at those who wish to partake in a slightly less challenging cycle. Sign on for the event takes place from 8.00 am at the Kingfisher NUI Galway and the cyclist depart at 9.00 am. Galway Bay Cycling Club hope that events like these will encourage more people to cycle.
