NEARLY 80 GMIT art students will showcase their work at the annual GMIT Graduate Art Show beginning this Saturday, June 9, in Cluain Mhuire campus.
The exhibition, which runs until June 16, will show the exciting work of GMIT graduates, including textiles, painting, photography, painting, print, sculpture, ceramics, video/sound work, photography, drawing, performance, and installation. Themes explored by the 78 students range from personal memories and reflections, environment and social issues, and conceptural ideas around art practices.
The show will be opened by artist and curator Megs Morley on Saturday at 3pm.
Geraldine Quinn, the head of the GMIT Centre for the Creative Arts and Media, said there is both a contemporary and traditional feel to this year’s show.
“Paintings and prints can be seen alongside works in new media and technologies. The scale and presence of some larger sculptural works sit comfortably with the delicacy of small-scale drawings and constructions in textiles,” she said.
“Works range from a suspended traditional wooden currach to cloned terracotta dolls; from video installations in specially constructed dark rooms to live art performances. The standard is again very high, and a visit to the show would not only be a rewarding experience, but would give support and recognition for the students’ work.”
Final year sculpture student Ramona Burke said she was looking forward to the show.
“[It is] an exciting and varied exhibition of visual art and a culmination of our time in GMIT Cluain Mhuire,” she said.
