THE AWARD winning Irish chamber choir, The Mornington Singers, will perform works by Bach, Mendelssohn, and Brahms in St Augustine’s this Saturday at 8pm.
The concert, entitled Legacy, will see The Mornington Singers and conductor Orla Flanagan perform Bach’s ‘Jesu meine Freude’; Sam Kavanagh’s ‘O Magnum Mysterium’; Paul Flynn’s ‘Hymnus Sancti Camelaci’; Ian Wilson’s ‘I Carry Your Heart’; Mendelssohn’s ‘Mitten Wir Im Leben Sind’; and Brahms’ ‘Warum Ist Das Licht Gegeben’.
Beginning with Bach’s ‘Jesu Meine Fruede’ the concert will take the audience on a journey through classical choral music to more contemporary works by Irish composers. One such piece is ‘Magnum Mysterium’ composed by the Mornington Singers’ own Sam Kavanagh. A multi-instrumentalist, Kavanagh holds a music degree from Trinity College and regularly writes music for film and stage. Another newly-composed Irish piece is ‘Hymnus Sancti Camelaci’ by Paul Flynn. Flynn is also a graduate of TCD, and some of his liturgical music is the regular repertoire of several choirs. The contemporary section closes with an arrangement of the ee cummings poem ‘i carry your heart’ which was composed by Ian Wilson, originally from Belfast, for the occasion of Mornington Singers conductor Orla Flanagan’s wedding to Arthur Parkinson. Ian Wilson has written over 100 vocal and instrumental pieces and his music has been performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall.
Legacy will take place at 8pm on Saturday 9 June, at St. Augustine’s Parish Church, Galway. Tickets €10/8.
