New Peugeot 208 awarded five stars

The new Peugeot 208, due for launch in Ireland on June 30, has been awarded five stars by Euro NCAP.

Under new and even more demanding criteria, Peugeot's 208 is the first car in its segment to obtain five stars, the highest rating possible, writes Padraic Deane.

Peugeot says the five-star Euro NCAP result is proof positive that the 208 has a high level of safety equipment. It is equipped with ABS, ESP, six airbags, rear Isofix fixings, speed limiter, front seat belt warning and a collapsible steering column. Its structure comprises aluminium absorption beams and ultra strength steel to ensure occupant protection.

In addition to a high level of standard safety equipment, the very unique driving position makes for more secure driving. Raising the instrument panel to eye level minimises the time a driver's eyes leave the road to check information and therefore reduces the chances of a collision. Furthermore, the small steering wheel gives better road control.

The new Peugeot 208 will arrive at Peugeot dealerships in Ireland for launch on June 30. Smaller on the outside, but bigger on the inside than its predecessor 207, the 208 is also 110kg lighter, meaning lower CO2 results, excellent fuel consumption, and lower running costs.

Prices and standard equipment for the new Peugeot 208 will be announced closer to the launch.
