Bollards must be installed immediately on the sloped cobbled area of Ballyloughane beach to stop horses with carts coming onto the sand.
This is the view of Independent councillor Terry O’Flaherty who is calling on the Galway City Council to install the bollards. However the councillor pointed out that she made representations last year in relation to this issue and to date “nothing has been done”.
She wants to see bylaws introduced whereby horses will not be allowed onto the beaches throughout the city.
“I am amazed an accident has not occurred as I have witnessed teenagers and adult males running riot on horse and carts around Ballyloughane beach during the afternoons where very young children are playing,” she said. “Is it a case that only if an accident occurs that something will then be done in relation to this situation?”
