Two Galway men have been killed in separate accidents in the past week.
Joe Lane, 50, a photographer from Kilcolgan, was killed when a Ford Escort lost control at the Cavan Stages rally in Bailieboro, Co Cavan, on Sunday last, May 27. Mr Lane was a freelance sports photographer who had a passion for motorsport. He is survived by his wife Martina, daughter Shona, and son Graham. Caroline Cleary, 30, from Co Wexford, who was 14 weeks pregnant, was also killed in the incident. Several other people were injured in the incident, which occurred at approximately 11.10am on Sunday. Gardai and Motorsport Ireland are currently conducting separate investigations.
Mr Lane was buried yesterday, Wednesday May 30, at Clarinbridge Church, where a guard of honour was provided by Galway Motor Club. Tributes have poured in for the father of two, who was described as a “fine photographer” and a “gent” who died doing what he loved.
Meanwhile, a man was killed in a workplace accident in Tuam on Tuesday evening, May 29. The victim has been named locally as Joe Ruttledge. It is believed that the 47-year-old Portumna native was fatally injured as he worked on the hydraulics of a lorry at Wers Waste on the Galway Road.
Mr Ruttledge was pronounced dead at the scene. Gardai are treating the incident as a tragedy, and the Health and Safety Authority has been alerted.
