Volunteers provide new emergency health service by motorbike

A new charity has been launched in Galway to help in medical emergencies.

Blood Bike West is a group of motorbike enthusiasts who volunteer to provide an emergency out-of-hours free service to the HSE in the west of Ireland.

Their mission is to act as a voluntary service which will provide the transportation of urgently needed blood, blood products, patient records, drugs and other medical requirements between hospitals in the western region free of charge to the HSE.

Bluebird Care in Galway has donated the group’s first motorbike, and its managing director says the service will save lives.

"We at Bluebird Care are delighted to be associated with what I believe to be a highly valued service. This service will save lives and that is something that Bluebird Care is passionate about. Blood Bike West is very similar to our own ethos, delivering excellent home care services to all our customers. This partnership is such an excellent fit for both organisations."

Blood Bike West hosted a fundraising motorcycle ride out, on Sunday last, which started in Kilcolgan, with more than 80 bikes in attendance. It was a huge success and generated much needed funds and interest in the service.
