Clifden’s bicentenary party kicks off this weekend

The party to celebrate Clifden’s bicentenary starts this weekend.

RTE personality Ryan Tubridy will open the festival on Saturday at 6pm in the Town Square, and the party will continue until Monday June 4.

Clifden was founded 200 years ago by John D'Arcy and Tubridy, who also celebrates his birthday at the weekend, last year became the first man to receive the Freedom of Connemara.

The festival also includes a traditional Galway hooker and curragh regatta, artisan streetmarkets, street theatre, an outdoor public concert of Irish music and dance, traditional craft demonstrations, workshops, and family events.

There will also be a major welcome home street party where people with family connections or links to the town will return to Clifden for the craic, caint agus ceol, while visitors will also have the chance to trace their ancestral roots.
