The No campaign on the Fiscal Compact Treaty referendum offer no answers to the euro currency crisis or Ireland’s economic problems. They offer no certainty and no plan.
This is the view of Labour Galway West TD Derek Nolan who is calling on the Galway public to vote Yes in the referendum on May 31.
Dep Nolan said the treaty is “designed to ensure the good-housekeeping rules we signed up to when the joined the euro are properly enforced” in order to “support long term confidence that the currency”.
He added that the treaty is the political basis on which European countries have agreed to lend their taxpayers’ money to other countries in future.
“Ireland wants certainty for our taxpayers,” he said. “Firstly, we need certainty of access to those funds if we need them, and secondly, certainty that other countries are not reckless in how they run their economies.”
Dep Nolan admitted that the treaty “is not the single solution to the euro crisis” but that it is “one of a series of measures needed to stabilise the currency and provide the space for economic growth and jobs”.
The Galway West TD was highly critical of the No campaign, accusing its members of “running an emotional rather than a rational campaign”.
“Many of them are simply trying to harness people’s genuine anxieties and hurt for their own political gain,” he said. “It is cheap politics. The No camp offer no real plan, other than fantasy economics and magic wand solutions that make everything perfect over night. More importantly, they provide no certainty of funding for this country in the years ahead. They offer no certainty and no plan.”
