Mayfly anglers brave strong winds as Irish team wins

The local team, representing Ireland, were the winners of this year’s Mayfly Competition, hosted in Oughterard at the weekend.

Martin Noone, Packie Kellagher, Joe Healy, and Pat Healy claimed the team prize ahead of Wales at the annual International Mayfly Competition (casting and dapping ) on Lough Corrib.

More than 100 adults and 10 junior entrants braved the strong winds, touching gale force, at this year’s event. Six anglers brought 10 trout to the weigh-in at Oughterard Pier. The heaviest trout was won by Welshman Alan Evans with a 3.3lb trout.

2nd, Team Wales; Heaviest trout, Alan Evans /trout 3.3lbs (Wales ); Individual winners, 1st Alan Evans- 2 trout / 4.74lbs; 2nd Pat Healy – 3 trout / 4.55lbs; 3rd Martin Noone – 1 trout / 2.35lbs; Junior Winner - Robert Naughton Mayfly Pickers – The Fox brothers.

This weekend sees two competitions in Greenfields. The John Heffernan Memorial Cup will be contested by members of the Headford Club and the Fermoy Anglers. Dapping and fly casting will be permitted. Sunday will commence with a Mass for deceased club members in Claran Church, followed by an open flyfishing and dapping competition at Greenfields. For further information telephone 0873562790.
