Volunteer guidebook for sports clubs launched.

A new volunteer management booklet for sports clubs in Galway city and county has been launched by Galway Volunteer Centre and Galway Sports Partnership.

The booklet is part of National Volunteering Week, which is taking place this week ( May 14 to May 20 ), aims to encourage more members of the public to volunteer with their local club. The booklet is available for free and can be downloaded on Galway Volunteer Centre’s website at www.volunteergalway.ie

The booklet, available in both English and Irish, provides tips and guidance to sporting organisations on how to recruit and manage volunteers. There is a wide range of volunteer roles available with sports clubs, including coach, referee and manager roles as well as roles for first aiders, fundraisers, pitch mowers, administrators, tea makers, kit washers – and many more.

Donncha Foley, development manager with Galway Volunteer Centre, says each role is important for the effective running of any sports club.

“ If you volunteer with a sports club, you will be making a vital contribution to its success - whatever the actual role you undertake. Star players can’t shine without effective volunteers providing the support they need,” he said.

As part of the campaign, sports clubs that need volunteers are also being encouraged to register volunteer opportunities with Galway Volunteer Centre, who can then advertise the volunteer roles to more than 5,000 potential volunteers in the city and county.

Sports clubs and other non-profit organisations wishing to advertise volunteer roles with Galway Volunteer Centre can do so by registering their roles online atwww.volunteergalway.ie or by contacting the centre, which is based in Mill Street on 091-539930.
