Volunteers are needed to help clean up Galway’s canals on Saturday.
The call is being made by the Galway Branch of the Irish Wildlife Trust and for members of the public to get involved with the Marine Month of Madness.
The month long programme includes a range of events related to marine and freshwater habitats, starting on Saturday with the canal clean-up which takes place at 11am in the Fisheries Field.
Then on Saturday May 26 , the group will help lead a Beach Safari on Grattan Beach in Salthill, starting at 2pm. This guided walk will take a look at the animals and plants commonly found in all the habitats around the seashore.
"The canal clean-up offers a chance for people to help clean up and restore Galway's much-loved waterways,” says Sheila Murphy, chairperson of the IWT Galway branch, which is helping to run the events. ”The Beach Safari will give people of all ages the opportunity to learn about the many fascinating plants and animals that live on the shores around our city."
The Marine Month of Madness is organised by the Galway Atlantaquaria in Salthill, and features a host of other events including a series of ocean-themed talks and a whale rescue demonstration. It will culminate with World Oceans Day on Sunday June 10.
