The badly damaged bridge leading to the Fisheries Tower on Wolfe Tone Bridge looks likely to be repaired in the near future.
At a meeting of the Corrib Navigation Trustees on Tuesday, Independent councillor Catherine Connolly, the vice chair of the Corrib Navigation Trustees, tabled a motion to allocate €50,000 to the project.
She said the money should be allocated on the basis that part of the building will be used to highlight and tell the story of the Eglinton Canal and the Claddagh basin. The motion was unanimously accepted.
This money is in addition to the money from the Inland Fisheries Board who own the Tower and Bridge but who have always made it available to the Civic Trust.
Cllr Connolly said the Galway City Council has also confirmed that it is examining its financial situation with a view to the provision of some funding.
“All in all this is wonderful news,” said Cllr Connolly. “The allocation of funding from the Corrib Navigation Trustees is a win win both for the Trustees, the Civic Trust, and the city of Galway.”
