A DIVERSE array of Irish musical talent will take to the stage of the Róisín Dubh next Monday from 8pm for the launch of the new Communion night.
The debut Communion Galway show will feature The Filthy Six, Ross Breen, Milan Jay, The Driftwood Manor, Yawning Chasm, and Twin Headed Wolf.
Communion began in 2006 at London’s Notting Hill Arts Club. Founded by Mumford & Sons’ Ben Lovett, former Cherbourg bassist Kevin Jones, and producer Ian Grimble, it quickly grew into a community of musicians and fans, providing an independent platform for young artists in London.
The idea has now spread to other cities with a view to showcasing new and emerging talent and the championing of independent music.
Galway’s Milan Jay have been described as one of Ireland’s most eclectic groups, earning them comparisons to The Beta Band and Super Furry Animals and praise from the BBC’s Steve Lamacq and The Irish Times’ Jim Carroll.
Carroll said of them: “Milan Jay is about feel-good, whip-smart funky indie-electronica with an array of monster melodic hooks keeping it all in check.” Check out their debut album Mellow Funk and listen to them on www.soundcloud.com/milan-jay Soul jazz outfit The Filthy Six play a hip-shakingly powerful mixture of jazz, funk, and soul. The Driftwood Manor is a folk group built around talented singer-songwriter Eddie Keenan. Expect to hear songs infused by Irish folk traditions but given a fresh twist through indie/alternative influences.
Yawning Chasm is the stage name of Galway singer-songwriter Aaron Coyne. Ross Breen is a musician and songwriter from Kildare, Ireland. He has recently finished recording his debut album, When I Met The Devil.
Twin Headed Wolf is Dublin/Clare duo Julie and Branwen who describe their music as “creepy circus folk” inspired by the circus, scrapyards and performance art. Check them out on Soundcloud.
