Top badminton honours for NUIG and GLTC

NUIG and Galway Lawn Tennis Club members have been crowned the top badminton players in the county.

The annual doubles finals of the Galway County Badminton Association were held on Sunday in the Galway Lawn Tennis Club, Salthill, with 12 deciders in mens and ladies’ doubles from divisions one to six.

. In the showpiece division one finals, Orla Creaven and Ciara Ni Chonchuir from NUIG beat Bridie McNamara and Emer Lalor of GLTC, while men’s crown was won by Tom Howley and Adrian Fitzmaurice of GLTC, who narrowly overcame their club rivals Dave Lalor and Bryan Lalor in two immensely close sets, both with a 22-20 scoreline.

The finals followed two qualifying events held in the previous fortnight with more than 200 players from each of Galway's 16 registered badminton clubs competing for the titles.
