On the wine shelf

Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc 2010

(Tesco, €5.49 )

From South Africa’s Western Cape Ken Forrester makes Chenin Blanc for a number of retailers in the Irish market but none of it selling at this remarkably good value, which is part of Tesco’s on-going wine sale until May 1. Uncomplicated pear drops and citrusy nose is followed by buckets of more intense mineral fruit on the palate, the apples green and tangy leading to a refreshing finish with a bit of zip. A lippy young wine with plenty to say for itself and at this price a real steal.

Tesco Finest Barolo 2007

(Tesco, €15 )

Also part of Tesco’s ongoing wine sale, this particular give-away, down from €24, is well worth a splash. Hand-harvested low-yield 100 per cent Nebbiolo from the foothills of Italy’s Piedmont, this has been two years in oak and is ever so slightly spicy with a fragrance of roses on the nose with enticing damsons and cherries in plentiful supply. On the palate, the fruit is again in evidence tingled with spice and herbs and offers a long satisfying smooth finish.
