History was made in Cork last weekend when, after 34 years of trying, the Connacht Squash men’s team finally got their hands of the Irish Squash interprovincial title.
The event, which attracts the top players from each of the four provinces and has been held annually since 1978, was the one title that had always eluded the province, having won every other title from junior to masters’ level.
The team of Keith Moran from Sligo, Brian Byrne from Claremorris, and Niall Rooney, Ross Lillis and Ronan Tully all from Galway, defeated Leinster 4-1, Munster 5-0, and Ulster 4-1 en route to this victory.
Edwin Brennan, Connacht Squash president, said: “It is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved. Many teams have come so close in the past, but it was our weekend. The whole squad is delighted with the historic win and we are looking forward to defending our title next year.”
