Oldest Galway paper for sale for €10 million

The oldest newspaper in Galway has been put up for sale with a price tag of €10million.

The Tuam Herald newspaper, which was founded in 1837 is the third family owned newspaper in the west to be placed for sale this year.

Already The Sligo Champion has been sold for E20million while The Mayo News is currently also on the market.

It is also believed that another Galway newspaper group is actively seeking a buyer for its titles and has held several unfruitful meetings with prospective buyers.

The Tuam Herald is owned by editor David Burke and his first cousin Iain Burke who is the financial controller of the company.

Under David and his father Jarlath Burke, the Herald was one of the highest regarded regional newspapers in the country as it produced dozens of top national and regional journalists and photographers. It also has a printworks for commercial printing.

The sale is being handled by Raglan Capital and is expected to be concluded before the end of the year.
