Celebrate Moore’s melodies at NUIG this weekend

THE MUSIC of Thomas Moore (1779 - 1852 ) will be celebrated and performed in NUI, Galway this weekend with a concert, conference, and exhibition.

My Gentle Harp: Moore’s Irish Melodies 1808 - 2008 comes to the Aula Maxima at NUIG this Saturday at 8pm and will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the first publication in 1808 of Moore’s Irish Melodies.

Performing Moore’s music on the night will be pianist Úna Hunt with Dean Power, Claudia Boyle, and Gavan Ring - prize-winning vocalists from the DIT Thomas Moore Festival. The programme will also features ‘souvenir’ piano music, written by 19th century composers in response to Moore’s Melodies.

The concert will coincide with a conference Thomas Moore: Texts, Contexts, Hypertext, tomorrow and Saturday, in the Aula Maxima. Speakers include Moore’s biographer, Ronan Kelly, Irish cultural critics Luke Gibbons and Emer Nolan, musicologist Harry White, and Moore editors Jeffery Vail and Jane Moore.

The conference will open with a lecture and recital at 12 noon tomorrow by tenor and scholar James Flannery, accompanied by harpist Janet Harbison.

My Gentle Harp also includes a travelling exhibition which will be on display in the Aula Maxima until December 5.
