SWAN LAKE, one of the most famous, and best loved, of all ballets, will be performed by Ballet Ireland in the Royal Castlebar Theatre on Tuesday December 9.
There will be pirouettes, plies, and piqués aplenty, when Ballet Ireland - celebrating its 10th anniversary - produces Swan Lake which combines romantic themes, classical technique, and Tchaikovsky’s celebrated score.
The scenario, initially in four acts, was inspired by Russian and German legends, which tell the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse.
In 1875, Tchaikovsky was commissioned by the Moscow Ballet to produce the music for Swan Lake, work which he accepted as it paid well and allowed him to try his hand at a different type of music. Its first performance in 1877 was not a success but it was revived after the composer’s death in 1893.
In January 1895, the score was edited and the scenario revised by Marius Petipa and choreographer Lev Ivanov, and most companies base their stagings both choreographically and musically on this revival.
