Galway corner back Kieran McGrath had more reason than most to be disappointed with how Kildare pinched promotion from Alan Mulholland’s team last Sunday afternoon.
After putting in a tremendous defensive performance all through the tie, it was the Corofin player’s innocuous foul on 73 minutes that led to the concession of the penalty that was superbly tucked away by Johnny Doyle.
McGrath was very honest in his assessment of Eddie Kinsella’s late decision.
“I got caught on the wrong side of my man for the break. I put my hand in and, once the Kildare player felt the pressure, he went down. That is what happens. It was heart breaking really. But it is a long year and hopefully we will build for the championship.
“We will take the positives from the league and focus on the Roscommon game on May 20. There were a lot of positives last Sunday too and it is a very young side. We will try to build for the summer. It will be onwards and upwards from here on.”
