Galway Simon Community have launched the Galway Simon Women’s Mini Marathon 2012. Kyle Tonetti and Dave Moore, Connacht Rugby, were on hand to help, while encouraging everyone, young and old, to come out, have fun and take part for Galway Simon.
The 'Galway Simon Women’s Mini Marathon' takes place on Sunday, 24th June 24, and the 10km race takes off from Salthill Park at 11am. The event, which is in its fourth year, is looking for people to get involved, get fit and help raise much needed funds for Galway Simon in the fight against homelessness in Galway.
The mini-marathon welcomes entrants over 18 and promises to provide a day of entertainment in Galway. Pre and post-event participants will enjoy entertainment for the whole family with music, performers, and amusements for all. Goody bags will be provided to all participants, with fantastic spot prizes for those who raise additional sponsorship for Galway Simon, and the ultimate prize for whoever raises the highest amount.
Hazel Hendy, Galway Simon, said “The success of this event has gone from strength to strength. We are delighted that the people of Galway and beyond continue to come out, take part and support Galway Simon in this event. We invite people of all ages and ability to get together to run this fantastic race and help us raise the much needed funds that are vital to maintain our services. A huge thank you goes out to our primary sponsors Bon Secours Hospital in Renmore without whom the event would be impossible.”
With the race hoping to attract over 2,500 competitors, Galway Simon is asking for any volunteers to please come forward and help out on the day. Over 100 volunteers are required and anyone who is interested in volunteering on the day is asked to contact Michelle Powell, Galway Simon, on 091 381828 or [email protected]
Former participant Siobhan Moore said: “I’ve run this event every year so far. It’s a firm favourite in my running calendar and wouldn’t miss it. I can see why it’s increasing in popularity every year. I’d encourage families, runners and walkers from all over the country to take part; they won’t regret it. It’s a great, well organised day out. And it’s for a good cause.”

Galway Simon Community helps the most vulnerable in society to break the vicious cycle of homelessness by empowering them to take control of their lives and find and maintain a place they can call home. Galway Simon relies on donations from the public and fundraising events to help run its houses. The help and support from the public enables Simon to give people who are homeless the stability to start rebuilding their lives.
