THE HYPNOTIC Brass Ensemble - whose fans include Damon Albarn and Mos Def - will play Cuba*, Eyre Square, on Thursday December 4.
The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a nine-piece, Chicago-based jazz group. Eight of its members are brothers - the sons of the respected jazz musician Phil Cohran, who played with Sun Ra and who co-founded the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians.
The line up is band leader Gabriel Hubert (trumpet ), Saiph Graves (trombone ), Tycho Cohran (sousaphone ), Amal Baji Hubert (trumpet ), Jafar Baji Graves (trumpet ), Seba Graves (trombone ), Tarik Graves (trumpet ), Uttama Hubert (baritone ), and Christopher Anderson (drums ).
Originally from Chicago, the brothers started as a street ensemble before recording in 2004. They have performed with Mos Def, Aquilla Sadalla, and Phil Cohran. In late 2007 they recorded with Erykah Badu and Maxwell (musician ) Maxwell's latest effort. In 2007 they played at the North Sea Jazz Festival. More recently they have collaborated with Damon Albarn in his Gorillaz project.
The band often play impromptu outdoor street gigs and may do so when in Galway. Keep an eye out for them.
