Major new city art gallery space to be officially opened this evening

The launch of a major initiative for the visual arts takes place this evening at 7pm when The Shed, a new exhibition space and working gallery, is opened at the Middle Pier in Galway Docks.

Facilitated by the support of the Galway Harbour Company, The Harbour Hotel, and the Galway City Arts Office.

The Shed is a large 4,000sq ft warehouse space. In recent times The Shed has hosted an occasional one-off exhibition, but this evening’s launch marks the first time that it will be used on a continual basis, with a varied programme of events running from now until the end of the year.

The Shed will provide a unique space for the artists to create experimental large-scale sculptural works during a four week residency. The exhibitions will be instigated by local artists affiliated with Adapt Galway, a coalition of local visual arts organisations. Adapt hopes to provide a platform for local artists to showcase their talents at a local and national level.

Upcoming exhibitions include new work by Waterford artists (April 13 to 30 ); ArtSpace Studios – Open workspace and exhibition (May 1 to 22 ); Kitchen Table Collective artists (May 23 to June 14 ); 126 Artists in association with the Galway Arts Festival (July 15 to August 7 ); Unrequited Hatred group exhibition (August 8 to 25 ); The Space Between art, craft, and design exhibition (August 26 to September 16 ); Engage Art Studios (September 17 to October 7 ); Tulca 2012 (November ).

At this evening’s launch, many local artists will be available to discuss the concept and the programme of events. The Forge Studios, being the first group to occupy the shed, will show their work in progress.

The public is invited to attend this evening’s opening. For more information email [email protected] or see www.adaptgalway.com, theshedgalway.blogspot.com, or Facebook.
