Contracts signed for Knocknacarra Community Centre

Contracts for the construction of a Knocknacarra Community Centre were signed yesterday, following a successful tendering process.

In October 2011 the Galway City Council forwarded tender documentation to eight contractors which had expressed an interest in constructing the community centre in Cappagh Park. The centre will incorporate the existing dressing rooms at Cappagh Park and be adjacent to the children’s playground and playing pitches.

Final tenders were due to be completed last December with six contractors sending completed tender documentation by the deadline date. The funding necessary for the centre’s construction is in place. The appointment of a contractor should see the centre completed by mid-2013.

The news has been welcomed by Independent councillor Donal Lyons who said he is “delighted that a community centre for Knocknacarra is finally within sight”.

“This is fantastic news for the community,” he said, “and brings to an end a long running saga. The provision of a community centre was first identified as a priority in 1995.”

Cllr Lyons said he wanted to thank city manager Joe O’Neill, director of services Kevin Swift, and officials at City Hall for “progressing the provision of the community centre”, as well as past and present councillors “who have been supportive of the community centre provision”.
