Sinn Fein 1916 commemorations in Galway

Galway Sinn Féin will hold a variety of events this weekend across Galway city and county to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising.

The main Galway city commemoration takes place on Easter Saturday at the Liam Mellows Statue in Eyre Square at 3pm. Meath West TD and party spokesperson on Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation Peadar Toibín TD will be the main speaker.

A wreath laying ceremony will take place on Easter Saturday at 6pm at the Joe Howley Statue in Oranmore. Oranmore SF spokesperson Mairéad Farrell will speak at this event.

The Ballinasloe commemoration takes place on Easter Sunday. Those wishing to participate should assemble in St Michael’s Square, Ballinasloe, at 12.30pm. The parade will leave the square at 1pm and march to Creagh Cemetery for a wreath laying ceremony for the Republican graves located there. The main commemoration will take place at the graveside of Noel McCann. Sinn Féin county councillor from Mayo Rose Conway Walsh will be the guest speaker.

Also on Easter Sunday at 1pm a commemoration will take place at the monument in Castlegar.

On Easter Monday Catríona Ruane MLA will speak at various commemorations in Connemara. She will be the guest speaker at Teach an Piarsaigh, Ros Muc, at 12 noon. She will also speak at the commemoration at Thomas Whelan’s statue in Clifden which will take place at 3pm.

At 5pm on Easter Monday a small ceremony will take place at the Tooreena Cemetery in Tullycross.

The party is also encouraging people to wear Easter lilies which are available from the local cumann.
