A young man who used up all his chances was jailed for two months last week and warned to behave himself when he is in Oranmore.
The Galway District Court also heard last Monday that gardai had begun investigating a complaint that had been made against Shane Allen. It has been alleged that the 21-year-old defendant had threatened another man in Oranmore, however, the complainant is not now pursuing the complaint.
Allen, with an address at Castle Road, Creganna, Oranmore, appeared before Judge Mary Fahy charged with being intoxicated in a public place and with threatening and abusive behaviour at Texaco, Oranmore, on July 26, 2008.
At a recent hearing the court heard that on July 5 at 11.20pm gardai were called to Oranmore because of reports of an altercation between two people in the forecourt of Texaco filling station. When gardai attempted to break up the fight the defendant became abusive to them.
Defence solicitor Olivia Traynor had said that both men had been employed in the same company and had been out that night and “words were exchanged”. She said that the matter has been resolved. The court also heard that the defendant had 18 previous convictions for road traffic offences, public order, and an assault.
In court this week Sgt Sean Gormally told Judge Fahy that he would have difficulties with the defendant, who is now living with his parents in Athenry. He said that a complaint had been made by a young man who alleged that he had been threatened by Allen. This matter is currently being investigated, however, Sgt Gormally said that the complainant who lives close to Oranmore “does not wish to proceed because he feels threatened”.
Sgt Gormally said that the defendant was in Oranmore only “now and again” but when he was there “his influence in relation to young people is not great”. “He must behave himself when he is in Oranmore,” he warned.
“I don’t know what his problem is. There’s very good parental support and he’s had a lot of sympathy from the court. He thinks he is invincible and can get away with it,” said Judge Fahy who imposed a two month sentence and a fine of €100.
