Gardaí get set for Galway deportations

Gardai are to seek deportation orders in relation to at least four illegal immigrants, one of whom had been in the country without registering for at least three years, the Galway District Court heard recently

The first case to be heard was that of Nadja De Araujo Souza of 5 St Andrews, Cross Street, Galway, who had been summoned to appear before Judge Mary Fahy for failing to register at the Immigration Office between September 30, 2006, and October 22, 2008.

Garda evidence revealed that the woman came from Brazil to Ireland in September 20, 2006, for a “holiday” but failed to leave the State. The court heard that at this stage the defendant had been two years illegal and an application will be made to have her deported.

Judge Fahy was then told that the defendant and her husband, who is also a co-defendant, Robson De Souza with the same address, were both unemployed. Robson De Souza failed to register between the dates of March 29, 2008, and October 22, 2008, and was now in the same situation as his wife. They were each fined €500 with two months to pay.

Raul Sanhueza Cabellero of 5 Merlin Gate, Dublin Road, had also been summoned to appear in court for the offences of working without a permit at a fitness club between July 22, 2008 and September 10, 2008. He also failed to register at the Immigration Office between the dates of May 23, 2008, and September 10, 2008. He first registered on November 30, 2007, and was to attend a course at Mercy College in Galway but had failed to re-register. An application for deportation will also be lodged by gardai. Judge Fahy fined the defendant a total of €1,000 with three months to pay.

Thirty-nine-year-old Marcelo Cancino Bustamante of 42 Oaklands, Salthill, was also summoned for failing to register between the dates of January 1, 2005 and August 19, 2008. The court heard that the defendant, who is a native of Chile, had been in the State since 2002, only leaving for a holiday in 2005.

His solicitor told Judge Fahy that the defendant had been in the country for about six years working on the minimum wage and had come from a very deprived area back home. The court heard how the defendant presented himself at the Immigration Office to try to put things right and has since lodged an application. He was fined €500 with three months to pay.

Finally, Alex Soares of 24 Gleann Rua, Renmore, was summoned for failing to register and for working without a permit. The defendant had been in the country since August 27, 2007, and had been allowed to stay until September 4, 2007. As a result of information relating to another matter gardai went through the staff at a city centre fashion retail store and found him working without a permit. He was fined €500 and gardai are to file an application for his deportation.
