A 28-year-old man accused of stealing more than €17,000 from a city centre cafe has been sent forward for trial for the three counts of theft and it is expected that he will also face trial in relation to a false imprisonment incident at another dining establishment.
Chandravee Jhurry with an address at 74 Cill Ard, Bohermore, was brought before Galway District Court on Monday charged with stealing €6,014 between September 19 and September 25, stealing €5,077 between the dates of September 26 and October 2, 2011, and stealing €5,829 between October 3 and October 9 at Boutique Restaurant, Newtownsmith, contrary to Section 4 of the Criminal Justrice (Theft and Fraud ) Act 2001. Jhurry is further charged with false imprisonment of a person at Mauritian Creole Cuisine, Forster Street, on January 16, 2012, contrary to Section 15 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.
Garda Mark Kelly gave evidence of serving the book of evidence on the accused man in relation to the three counts of theft. Inspector Mick Coppinger told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has consented to the accused being sent forward for trial to the Galway Circuit Criminal Court sittings commencing May 1. He added that the DPP has also directed that the false imprisonment charge is to proceed on indictment and that a book of evidence is to be prepared in relation to this.
In relation to the three counts of theft Judge Mary Fahy confirmed the order for return for trial to Galway Circuit Court and for the remaining charge Jhurry was further remanded in custody to appear again at Galway District Court on April 23 for the service of the book of evidence.
