Scarves
Scarves, like red lipstick, are often the answer to any fashion dilemma. In Brown Thomas, the collection of scarves in the accessories department for spring summer 2012 screams luxury and quick fix. A coat that looks dreary? Amp it up with a scarf. A dress that looks bare? Layer it with a scarf. Like people, scarves have their own personality and whether you find yourself drawn to Alexander McQueen (the coral skull scarf could be framed and hung on a wall if it did not do so much to brighten your face ) or Valentino (so feminine and elegant you automatically think of pairing it with your favourite cashmere cardigan ), the scarf will pick you as much as you will pick it.
New to Brown Thomas are the Weston scarves, created by Richard Weston. Mr Weston, professor of architecture, author, inventor, and designer, has used years of his free time creating magnificent silk scarves. His inspirations are varied, though all come from nature, including fossils, minerals, and stones. Lovingly made (you can tell! ) in Italy in the Lake Como district, they are luxurious in length and the patterns have an almost dreamy quality. Because of the quality of the fabric and the beautiful designs they can be worn to equal effect with a dress or coat or even a pair of denims.
A scarf for a different mood might be the DVFs; with bold geometric patterns and shapes in the most extraordinary vivid colours, these oversized scarves tick all the boxes for a summer option. Bright and impactful, opposing colours brought together to dramatic effect give these scarves a wow factor and a very good price point. For another girl or another mood, the quietly beautiful Franco Ferrari scarves are soft and elegantly understated.
Watch for local listings, at Brown Thomas we often run scarf tying tutorials during fashion workshops. These are great, quick, informative (and informal ) lessons on how to tie your scarf in multiple ways, but also, more importantly, how to tie them to suit your shape and proportion. If you have a scarf at home and you are trying to find the perfect way to wear it for your shape, why not come to one of the tutorials, or just pop into the accessories department and have one of the experts guide you?
Accessories come and go, but scarves are timeless. You can always trot out your mother’s old Hermes or any other scarf from any other era, whether it is for drama or just plain old functionality.
