A pilot one-way system for traffic in the city centre needs to be considered if Galway is serious about tacking the major problem of traffic congestion.
This is the view of Independent councillor Declan McDonnell who is calling for “consideration of all options” relating to this issue.
“We need to start thinking outside the box,” he said. He has also asked City Hall officials to develop a pilot scheme for a one-way system between Bohermore and a section of the Headford Road and another between Lough Atalia and College Road.
Cllr McDonnell says a one-way system with bus lanes should be considered and he argues that “it has been proven” in other cities to be “one of the most effective ways” to reduce traffic.
He said the introduction of such a system would “cause problems for some people” but it could also be the start of a solution to traffic congestion.
“If a one-way system proves effective in alleviating traffic congestion then we could look at making it a longer term fixture,” he said. “We need to consider all options to improve traffic flow as congestion is affecting trade and costing jobs and I hope that a pilot scheme of a one-way system can be implemented as soon as possible.”
