Woman pleads guilty to operating city brothel

A 34-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to operating a brothel in the city centre and has been remanded on continuing bail for sentencing.

Romanian national Monica Ciuciu with a confirmed address at 33 Cois Clair, Claregalway, appeared at Galway District Court on Monday where she entered the plea of guilty to the charge of acting or assisting in the management of a brothel on February 11 this year, contrary to Section 11 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences ) Act 1993, at apartment 3, 15 Mary Street.

Bail had been refused at a court sitting two weeks ago after it was revealed that Ciuciu had been the subject of two marriage proposals and that gardai had concerns over her address.

This week defence solicitor Ronan Murphy said the Claregalway address has since been verified and his client secured High Court bail. He added that Ciuciu was entering a plea of guilty to the charge.

Inspector Sean Glynn told Judge Mary Fahy that the matter was still under investigation and a short adjournment would be required.

Judge Fahy remanded Ciuciu on continuing bail, as set by the High Court, to appear before the court again on March 21 for sentencing.
