Man charged with robbery at knifepoint sent for trial

An 18-year-old youth charged with attempting to rob a number of women in the Salthill area, one at knife point, has been sent forward for trial.

Tyrone Crockford with an address at 53 Glenard Crescent, Salthill, was brought in custody before Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court on Monday charged with attempting to rob a woman at Churchfields, Lower Salthill, and a second woman at Devon Park, Salthill, on November 19, 2011. He is also charged with attempting to rob a third woman and possession of a knife used to threaten the woman to hand over her handbag at Whitestrand Road, Lower Salthill, on January 4, 2012.

The court heard how the book of evidence had been served on the accused at a previous court sitting held on February 25. Inspector Ernie Whyte informed the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented to the accused being sent forward for trial to the next sittings of the Galway Circuit Criminal Court, and that consent had also been given for Crockford to be sent forward on a signed plea.

Judge Fahy gave Crockford what is known as the alibi warning before granting legal aid plus one junior counsel. She then remanded the accused in continuing custody to be sent forward for trial to the Galway Circuit Court sittings commencing May 1 next.
