Galway prepares for the biggest St Patrick’s Day Parade

This year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade in Galway promises to be the biggest the city has held for many years.

Local artists, community groups, demonstrations of local heritage and culture, marching bands and groups from all over the world, including Scotland, the USA and Canada, will descend on the city for this national day of celebration.

This year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade will start at 11.30am and finish at approximately 1.00pm. Businesses in the city will be open on the day, but roads will be closed from 11am until the parade has passed.

Anyone considering crossing the city is advised to consider an alternative route, ie, use the Quincentennial Bridge - otherwise traffic delays can be expected. Rolling closures will be for a minimum period of time.

Nominate a

guest of honour

The organisers of the parade are also calling on the people of Galway to nominate their Guest of Honour for this year’s Parade. They are looking for a teenager, aged between 14 -18 years who has accomplished something significant or extraordinary for themselves or others and lead the parade on March 17 in Galway city.

They are inviting the people of Galway to nominate someone they know who is deserving of this accolade.

The organisers believe it is important to recognise the achievements of teenagers in our communities and want to provide an opportunity for a teenager who has shown courage, caring and commitment in his/her life or to others within the community.

A judging committee with representatives from community groups and businesses has been put in place and will decide the winner.

To nominate a teenager email contact details, the name of the teenager, and the reason for the nomination to: [email protected] Closing date for nominations is Thursday March 8.

Foroige’s youth service Galway City Youth Café is collaborating with all youth groups throughout the city and county to design and construct the largest green snake Ireland has seen. Young people have already begun the challenging job of constructing the monster snake within the youth cafe based next to Jigsaw Galway on Fairgreen Road.

They are calling all young people to help create the snake and participate in the street performance on the day, and participants do not have to be an artist or performer.

Rachel Shearwood, the youth café’s artist, is coordinating the project and welcomes all to go along to workshops any evening from 4pm to 6pm. For more information, call into youth café; email, [email protected], or call 091535370.
