Inis Iron Meáin returns for St Patrick’s weekend

The Aran Island of Inis Meain will host its unique 10k race this year on Sunday March 18.

The Inis "Iron" Meáin, now in its eighth year, attracts hundreds of participants from all over the country for a weekend of fun, exercise, and celebration. Importantly it also helps to raise funds for the island's second school, Colaiste Naomh Eoin, to help the island's continued development.

The event caters for both top athletes and the casual runner with two routes from which to choose, both of which take in a large part of the island, boasting spectacular views and variations in terrain - winding roadways, rough terrain, sand dunes and beaches. Preivous winners have included Sonia O'Sullivan.

And this year participants can also enjoy enjoy St Patrick's Day on the island - the only place and the only day of the year when the island's traditional game of Cead is played. The 10k is timed for 1.30pm the following afternoon before more celebrating that evening with the legendary 10k fancy dress and disco. This year's theme is the "Land Down Under" and once again there is a €100 voucher for the best costume.

Entries for the event close on Friday March 16. The registration fee is €50.
