MARCH 2012 marks the 94th anniversary of the death of Claude Debussy, the fin de siècle French composer who has inspired classical, avant-garde, and jazz musicians.
This year is also the 150th anniversary of Debussy’s birth and so with two occasions and reasons to commemorate and celebrate the great man, Music For Galway is hosting a Debussy concert.
Debussy - Celebration 150 Years will take place in the Hotel Meyrick on Tuesday March 13 at 8pm with Holland’s Lenneke Ruiten (soprano ) and Thom Janssen (pianist ), and the Galway based ConTempo Quartet performing Debussy’s final composition, Sonata for Violin and Piano, written in 1917; his Cello Sonata, a variety of his songs for voice and piano, and his String Quartet in G minor, Op 10 - Debussy’s only string quartet, this work considered to be hugely innovative in chamber music. There will also be a performance of Chausson’s Chanson Perpétuelle, Op 37.
The songs will be performed by Lenneke Ruiten. The Irish Times said of her singing: “The vocal line is always cleanly sculpted, the tone often pristinely ravishing, the sense of musical intelligence always high, and the virtuoso demands confronted head-on.”
