Man sent for trial on fifteen counts of assault against young girls

A 65-year-old city man accused of indecently assaulting a young female on various dates over a five year period and sexually assauling another more than a decade later has been sent forward for trial.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Galway District Court on Monday charged with 12 counts of indecently assaulting one female, contrary to Common Law and as provided for by Section 10 of the Criminal Law (Rape )(Amendment ) Act 1981, at a city housing estate on various dates between August 1, 1981, and August 31, 1986. He was further charged with three counts of sexually assaulting a second female, contrary to Section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape )(Amendment ) Act 1990 as amended by Section 33 of the Sex Offenders Act 2001, on various dates at another location between December 1, 1998, and September 1, 1999.

Detective Garda Mark Sheerin gave evidence this week of serving the accused man with book of evidence before the court sitting and that all 15 counts were included. Inspector Mick Coppinger then informed the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has consented to the accused being sent forward for trial to the next sitting of Galway Circuit Court.

Judge Mary Fahy made the order for the accused to be return for trial on continuing bail to the Galway Circuit Criminal Court sittings commencing May 1.
