Get Galway clean for Volvo Ocean Race says Tidy Town committee

Making sure Galway looks its best in time for the arrival of the Volvo Ocean Race this summer will be a key target of the Galway Tidy Towns committee this year.

Galway entered the Tidy Towns Competition in 2011, after a long absence, and scored very well. For the 2012 competition, the committee is hoping it can go a step further.

“This year we are going to be involving other groups who are doing similar work on the ground in the community,” said committee chair, Labour city councillor Niall McNelis.

The Galway Volunteer Centre, Galway Chamber, Fáilte Ireland, the City Business Association, the Latin Quarter, West End Traders, and residents’ groups will be involved. Cllr McNelis said the Galway City Council has also made “a commitment to assist”.

“The first step now is to document works that need to be done as soon as possible,” he said.
