Businesses and local residents in the Newcastle area have continued their objections to an off-licence application by Tesco Express which was refused for the second time in the District Court this week.
A large number of residents and businesses had lodged objections to the application, which was before Judge Mary Fahy on Tuesday, on the grounds that there was already an oversupply of off-licences in the area and concerns for the effect this would have on anti-social behaviour.
Local businessman Jonathan Corbett told the Advertiser that the decision by Judge Fahy to refuse the application was welcomed as there were already up to 10 off-licences along the entire stretch of Newcastle Road and the applicants have consistently failed to listen to the wishes of the people in the area.
City councillor Padraig Conneely, who was also present in court for the hearing, welcomed the court’s decision not to grant the licence.
Tesco Ireland have said that the company is now considering their options.
