THE PIER, a new Irish film, which has already won praise at film festivals in the Czech Republic, Israel, Greece, and Georgia, will be shown at The Eye this week.
Directed by Gerard Hurley, The Pier will be shown in The Eye from tomorrow through to Thursday February 9. Mr Hurley will participate in a Q&A with the audience after the Tuesday February 7 screening.
The Pier was filmed in New York and in various locations in west Cork and stars Karl Johnson, Gerard Hurley, and Lili Taylor.
After 20 years of no contact with his son, Larry McCarthy (Johnson ) pretends to be dying in order to trick his son, Jack (Hurley ), into returning to Cork. When Jack arrives he is furious to find his father alive and well and that he has been duped into coming home and staying.
“The Pier is a simple story about the relationship between a father and son,” says director Hurley. “They haven’t spoken in years and the father pretends to be on his deathbed to get the son to come home. Needless to say the son is less than impressed to see his dad playing golf in a field of cattle when he does return.”
Hurley was born in Cork and lived in New York for more than 25 years. In 2008, he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in his first feature film, The Pride, which explored domestic abuse in the Irish Traveller community in America. The Pier is his second feature film.
