NUI Galway’s Babel Public Lecture Series returns to the Town Hall Theatre this month, with a variety of speakers delivering talks on the theme of Tradition and Transformation.
The Babel Lectures is an initiative of the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at NUIG, which is designed to promote creative exchange and dialogues between academics and the community.
The lectures will take place once a month in the Town Hall Theatre studio and will be launched by the registrar and vice president of NUIG, Prof Nollaig Mac Congáil, on Tuesday January 31 at 6.30pm.
Tradition and Transformation will explore the creative and dynamic ways in which people have transformed their cultural heritage. The opening lecture takes place on January 31 after the launch, and will see Prof Bill Richardson deliver a lecture entitled Tradition and Transformation: Jorge Luis Borges and the Meaning of Life.
The next lecture will be Transforming Tradition: The Career of Joe Heaney, Sean-nós Singer 1919 – 1984, which will be delivered by Dr Lillis Ó Laoire on February 28.
On March 27 Dr Jacopo Bisagni will deliver the lecture ‘Returning to Babel’: Where did Human Languages Really Come From?
