Black Pencil to bring the folk sounds to NUIG

BLACK PENCIL “evokes a unique sound world of melody, polyphony, and abstraction. The ensemble is a great representative of new ways of combining folk cultures and contemporary art.”

So said Andante music magazine about the Dutch group that is coming to Galway to play the Aula Maxima, NUIG, on Thursday February 2 at 8pm.

The band - Jorge Isaac, artistic director/recorders; Matthijs Koene, panpipes; Esra Pehlivanli, viola; Enric Monfort, percussion; and Marko Kassl, accordion - will present their show Pulso Llanero that evening.

In addition they will also hold a ‘meet the musicians’ event that same day at 1pm. This will be an informal discussion with members of the ensemble, with performances by Esra Pehlivanli and Marko Kassl at The Cube in Áras na MacLeinn. Admission is free.

Black Pencil focuses on new repertoire and adventurous self-penned arrangements influenced by folk music. In Pulso Llanero, they will perform works specially written for the ensemble together with sparkling arrangements of folk tunes from the northern coast of South America.

Tickets to the February 2 show at 8pm are €20/16/6 from Music for Galway (091 - 705962, [email protected] ), Opus II, or www.tht.ie
