Galway athletes once again were on the podiums in the weekend’s sporting action.
On Sunday at the Woodies DIY Junior Indoor Championships, Galway’s only competitor, Peadar Harvey of Craughwell AC, delivered one of his best performances by winning silver in the 1500m. Harvey completed the 7.5 200m laps in a personal best of 4:12 seconds, which is also a new Craughwell AC club record for the event.
Although Harvey started off cautiously and ran much of the race in fifth position, he moved from sixth place to third with three laps remaining, and with just over a lap to go he surged to the front. However he could not shake Michael Carey of Clonmel AC from his shoulder who broke away with a little over 100m left to finish just under two seconds clear. This is the third natonal indoor medal for the 2011 Streets of Galway junior winner, having claimed bronze in the u-18 88m and silver in the 1500 in 2010.
On Saturday the AAI Games took place in Nenagh with Sean Breathnach of Galway City Harriers winning the men’s shot putt with a dominant 15.58m throw at his final attempt - more than two metres further than his opposition. Craughwell AC’s Rachel Finnegan secured bronze place in the triple jump with a mark of 9.13m.
At the National Senior and Junior Pentathlon, Craughwell AC’s Sineád Gaffney finished third place in the junior event with a score of 2504 points which included PBs in the 60m hurdles (10.87 ), shot putt (6.55m ) and high jump (1.44m ), while in the senior pentathlon, Sarah Finnegan took fourth place.
