Hurlers off to Belfield

The Galway senior hurlers will head to Dublin this Sunday for the quarter-final of the Walsh Cup against UCD in Belfield (2pm ).

The third level students qualified for the clash with the Tribesmen by virtue of their 2-13 to 0-11 win last weekend against Carlow.

There was some confusion during the week about the venue for this game as many Galway supporters thought that Sunday’s tie was to be fixed for Duggan Park, Ballinasloe.

However, should Galway advance this Sunday, the Walsh semi-final will be a home venue against either Dublin or Laois, which will hopefully give Galway hurling supporters an opportunity to see their team without travelling to a Leinster venue.

Anthony Cunningham and his management team of Matty Kenny and Tom Helebert will be keen to start their reign with a win, but UCD will pose a considerable challenge.

UCD are available at 15/8 to win and, considering they will be well advanced from a training perspective for the Fitzgibbon and are at home, they are not without hope. Galway are 4/11 to advance.

The Galway starting XV is likely to include many of last year’s All-Ireland u-21 side.
