Galway Peace Proms take place next month

THE GALWAY Peace Proms, featuring the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland and more than 1,800 primary school children from county Galway, take place next month.

The gala proms will be held in the Kingfisher Hall of NUI Galway on Saturday February 4 at 3pm and 8pm and on Sunday 5 at 2pm and 7pm.

February’s Peace Prom will be led by conductor Gearóid Grant, and will feature tenor Emmanuel Lawler, uilleann piper Patrick Martin, and violinist Patricia Treacy in addition to drum and piping corps.

The programme for the shows will feature family favourites, showstoppers, and anthems, as well as traditional music from across Ireland.

The schools taking part are Lawrencetown NS, Ballinasloe; Scoil Eoin Pól 2, Inis Mór; Scoil Naomh Breandán, Annaghdown; Scoil Nioclás Naofa, Dunmore; Mercy Primary School, Dublin Road; St Augustine’s NS, Clontuskert; St Brendan’s NS, Portumna; St James’ NS, Bushypark; St Nicholas’ School, Claddagh; St Theresa’s NS, Cashel; Kilcooley NS, Loughrea; Killeeneen NS, Craughwell; Kiltiernan NS, Kilcolgan; Scoil San Phroinsias Tirellan; Scoil an Chroi Naofa, Ballinasloe; Scoil an Linbh Iosa, Galway; Scoil Bhride, Shantalla; Scoil Cuana, Kilcoona; Scoil Iósaif Naofa, Oranmore.

Also taking part are Ballymana NS, Craughwell; Bawnmore NS, Bawnmore; Belmont NS, Cloghan’s Hill; Brierfield NS, Tuam; Buaile Beag NS, Rahoon; Clonberne National School; Convent Primary School, Gort; Coole School of Music, Streamstown, Peterswell; Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh, Knocknacarra; Sylane NS, Tuam; Scoil Fhursa, Nile Lodge; Scoil Ide, Salthill; Scoil Iognáid, Galway; Scoil na bhForbacha; and Scoil Náisiúnta Uachtar Árd, Oughterard.

The CBOI was established as a peace initiative almost 17 years ago and has performed throughout the USA and Europe. The orchestra developed the Peace Proms idea to give young people the opportunity to perform with a full symphony orchestra and work with Ireland’s leading professional musicians and conductors.
