Classical and folk combine in Trio Elatha

TRIO ELATHA, featuring cellist Ailbhe McDonagh, guitarist Brendan Walsh, and violinist Zoë Conway, play two concerts in County Galway this month.

The trio, who combine folk and classical music, will play the Galway Cathedral on Thursday January 19 at 8pm and the Raheen Woods Hotel, Athenry, on Friday January 20 at 8pm.

The programme for the concerts will feature music by Fernando Sor, Francois de Fossa, Arthur Duff, and Bach, as well as solo compositions by the members of Trio Elatha.

Zoë Conway has worked with Riverdance, Rodrigo y Gabriella, Nick Cave, and Lou Reed, as well as a guest soloist with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, The Ulster Orchestra, The RTÉ Concert Orchestra, The National Symphonia Orchestra of Ireland, Il Gardino Armonico of Italy, and The Symphony Orchestra of Galicia in Spain.

Brendan Walsh is a two-time All-Ireland Feis Ceol competition winner including the George Lowden Bach Prize. He is an active composer and premiered his first guitar concerto at the National Concert Hall in 2007.

His compositional output ranges from solo to orchestral and he has had his music performed in public recitals many times across Europe. He has premiered new works by CMC composers such as Martin O’Leary, Fergal Dowling, and David Stalling. In 2003 he founded and still directs the Diversus Guitar Ensemble.

Ailbhe McDonagh performs throughout Ireland and internationally as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, Asia, and the USA. Performances include concerts for the President at Áras an Uachtaráin, the Yale Norfolk Festival, Schleswig Holstein Music Festival, Great Irish Houses Festival, and Carnegie Hall.
