The Galway City Council’s roads department has been accused of “ignoring” the “serious levels of flooding” on the Seamus Quirke Road.
The accusation has come from Fine Gael councillor Pádraig Conneely who said “lack of road maintenance” and the “failure to clear flood gullies” is leading to “a major and dangerous flooding”.
“Despite several assurances from the roads department that the gullies would be cleared, nothing has been done,” he said. “The council has a duty to maintain public roads in the interests of motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians, and they have failed miserably in their duty.”
However the council’s director of services Ciarán Hayes said that such accusations were unfounded.
“We have continued to clear the gullies on a proactive basis and we will continue to do that,” he told the Galway Advertiser. “The Seamus Quirke Road is in the possession of Coffeey Contractors presently and Cllr Conneely would be aware of the issues on the road. In that context it is disappointing that he would make these statements without reference to us for clarification
