Galway Community College, Móinín na gCiseach were the winners of the Western Regional Senior C basketball final title. Moinin overcame Presentation College Athenry in a closely-contested game and only six points separated the teams at the finish.
Móinín led from the start with two quick baskets from Ellison Arroyo, who was outstanding throughout the contest. However Athenry were never too far away with Andrew Walsh contributing the vital scores.
Emmanuel Saah led the Móinín line in both defence and attack, scoring 18 points and causing constant chaos and disruption for the Athenry team, while Pedro Abraham, Elvis Konovalous and Patryk Szoitysek also contributed for the winners.
Athenry pressed for a come back in the fourth quarter, and reduced the gap to just three points with minutes remaining with scores from Daire MacMaghnuis, but in the end Móinín secured their first Connacht Senior title in many years.
• St Paul’s Oughterard have qualified as winners of Western Region u-16 b schools basketball and now go forward to a qualifying play-off tournament on January 22.
The Oughterard school had convincing wins over St Enda’s and the Jes and played Scoil Chuimsitheach An Cheathru Rua in the West School B Final prior to Christmas finishing 40 - 31 winners. It is a busy time for the school which now faces Cork CBS in the National Cup semi-final on Friday January 13 in University of Limerick.
