Go bird spotting at Kai Café

FIRST FLIGHT, an exhibition of colourfully taxidermied exotic birds, set into vibrant, kitsch backdrops, is launched at Kai Cafe and restaurant, Sea Road today.

The exhibition is the creation of local artist Demento Kelly, who has been practising reviving art of taxidermy for some years. The skill involves the preservation of dead animals, fish, or reptiles for display, such as you would see in the Natural History Museum. However Kelly has taken a humorous approach to the trade.

He also points out that the birds in his show died naturally. He insists that the animals he handles are treated with utmost respect and hopes “others may gain enjoyment from these pretty creatures just a little bit longer than nature intended”.

All pieces are for sale and the show will run for three weeks.
